2004-01-22 - High Time for Golfworks’ New CT250 Driver

NEWARK, OHIO — Building upon phenomenal material engineering and research, clubhead designers at The Golfworks have introduce their all-new CT250 Carbon/Titanium driver head — an innovative driver design that not only utilizes lightweight carbon material in an innovative composite crown design, but it pushes driver spring-effect to the absolute limit.

Unveiled in The Golfworks 2004 Clubmaker’s Catalog, the CT250 marries a high-strength carbon composite material with a Beta Titanium forged face to provide a forgiving driver design that maximizes the U.S. Golf Association’s new rules on ‘Characteristic Time.’ Recently, the USGA introduced a new standard for limiting the spring-face effect in driver and wood heads that results in increased ball launch speed. The previous rule which limited coefficient of restitution (COR) with a measurement of face deflection, however, Characteristic Time measures the amount of time a golf ball remains in contact with the clubface during impact, and that time limit is restricted to a maximum of 239 microseconds (with an 18 microsecond tolerance).

“One of the most interesting aspects of the CT250 design is the composite crown,” says Ralph Maltby, founder of Golfworks and leader of the component industry’s most experienced design team. “By offering a CT250 model that replaces the titanium crown with a composite crown, we relocate most of the head’s mass to the perimeter and increase clubhead speed for greater playability while still maintaining the Beta-Titanium forged face to maximize the Characteristic Time limit.”

The CT250 is available in two models — an all-titanium, four-piece, forged model and a titanium-composite model that relocates more mass to the perimeter by employing a composite material crown. Both models feature a 15-3-3-3 Beta-Titanium forged face designed to maximize Characteristic Time to the USGA limit. In addition, three tungsten screws improve head stability and optimize the launch angle by concentrating mass toward the rear and sides of the head. The face height of the CT250 also combines with a 10-inch horizontal bulge and vertical roll to optimize spin rate and launch angle.
