2004-04-15 - GolfWorks’ New Hybrid Irons Raise the Stakes

NEWARK, OHIO —In its third year, The GolfWorks ‘Controlled Energy Release’ line of clubheads brings a bold innovation to one of clubmaking’s premier brands and raises the stakes in performance. Featuring a sophisticated hybrid iron design that utilizes unique two-piece technology, GolfWorks’ new CER 3C irons highlight individual engineering that optimizes the specific loft of each iron in the set.

“Recognizing that each iron performs a different job, we worked closely with our most experienced manufacturers to develop an iron set that takes each iron and incorporates design elements that maximize its individual performance,” explains Britt Lindsey, vice president of technical services for The GolfWorks. “The result is a highly tuned set of irons that inspires confidence and balances game improvement with performance.”

Lindsey explains that the CER 3C irons (3- through 8-iron) are constructed from two 431 investment-cast, stainless steel pieces, a body-face-hosel piece and a sole. This enabled the GolfWorks design team to create a hollow, internal cavity which maintains a very consistent wall thickness — a feature that is critical in keeping mass positioned so that it aids, rather than fights, playability.

The 3-, 4- and 5-irons feature large hollow cavities and extremely low centers of gravity, making the CER 3C irons perfectly suited for launching the ball easily and with the proper trajectory. The weight of these irons is also distributed back and toward the heel and toe, imparting a great deal of left/right forgiveness. Generally easier to hit, the 6-, 7- and 8-irons are engineered with smaller cavities than the longer irons and with slightly higher centers of gravity. This unique design provides for a more powerful, solid feel that inspires confidence. The 9-iron, PW, GW and SW wedges are constructed with an undercut cavity for an extremely solid feel, while maintaining a high level of forgiveness on off-center hits.

“The new CER 3C irons take each loft and optimize the design for the type of shot for which the iron is used,” says Lindsey. “This is a true breakthrough in performance.”
