2004-10-20 - The GolfWorks Partners with Arthur Little Project

NEWARK, Ohio — There is no greater responsibility for golf equipment manufacturers and distributors than serving as a steward of the game of golf, and to grow participation in the game. Welcoming that responsibility, The GolfWorks — golf’s largest and oldest component distributor still under original ownership — is proud to join the Arthur D. Little project in researching how best to foster growth and encourage participation in the game worldwide.

“One of the primary goals of the Arthur D. Little Project is to better understand the factors which contribute to the retention or defection of golfers from the game, and we applaud their efforts,” says Al Bessin, co-CEO of The GolfWorks. “The research that the Little Project is doing should provide a better understand of the performance characteristics and attitudes of high-handicap and beginning golfers, and we want to strongly support in effort that brings new people into the game.”

The Arthur D. Little Project worked with The Pinehurst Golf Institute for nine months and refined a detailed questionnaire for collection of the desired data. The University of North Carolina has also assisted with the project, and it is serving as the ‘neutral’ host for analyzing survey answers. The questionnaire is going out to as many golfers as possible of every skill level, and will be posted for custom clubmakers, component buyers and golfers at golfworks.com and other other golf-related sites through November 1st. The link http://ire.uncg.edu/surveys/gcourse.asp also goes directly to the questionnaire hosted by UNC.

The Project’s other objectives include identifying the distances golfers of varying skill levels hit the ball using various clubs; defining the psychological factors affected by course design, hole lengths and other detracting or attractive aspects associated with the game; and developing models of truncated facilities and experiment with these to determine their effectiveness.
