2004-11-29 - Popular MXU Utility Woods Add New Distance, LH Options

NEWARK, Ohio — Providing the distance of woods and the shorter-club length playability of irons, The GolfWorks’ exceptional MXU Utility Woods were a huge success in 2004, providing exceptional control and great shots for thousands of golfers and clubmakers. For 2005, the ‘Maltby Xtreme Utility’ (MXU) line has expanded to include a new 20-degree model for drives the ball farther, while still retaining a higher trajectory than most fairway woods, as well as new left-handed models in 24- and 28-degree options.

“Playability is the key to the entire line of MXU Utility Woods, and we’ve received dozens of testimonials from clubmakers and their customers, all saying the same thing — the MXU Utility Wood has become their ‘go-to’ club for mid-distance shots in easy and tough lies,” says Mark McCormick, co-CEO of The GolfWorks. “The MXU line has been a real success story for clubmakers looking to fit their customers with extremely playable clubs, and the new 20-degree model and new left-hand models will greatly increase their fitting options.”

The GolfWorks research and design team, led by company founder Ralph Maltby and vice president of technical services Britt Lindsey, explains that the all-new 20-degree-lofted MXU head provides more distance with the same, higher trajectory for which the MXU Utility Woods are famous!

Using long-iron length shafts, MXU Utility Woods feature an offset, closed face that keeps the club face square at impact for straighter shots and a higher 1.45-inch-tall face that reduces a player’s tendency to pop the ball up when hitting from fluffy lies. A thick, heavy sole of 17-4 stainless steel lowers the MXU head’s center of gravity and helps pick up the ball up, sending it on an arcing trajectory. The rear of the sole features soft, rounded edges to minimize snagging on turf or digging into the sand from fairway bunkers. The 24-degree model is designed to replace 3- or 4-irons, finished to a length of 39 inches to 39.5 inches, and is now available in left-hand options. The 28-degree model is designed for mid-length shot and also now available in left-hand options.
