2005-01-17 - Forge Meets Cast in GolfWorks’ New PV FST Fairway Woods

NEWARK, OHIO — Fusing forging and casting technologies, The GolfWorks has melded together strength, advanced weight distribution and superior performance for its newest entry into the best-selling Peak Velocity line of woods — the new PV FST Fairway Woods. First introduced in the 2005 Master Clubmakers’ Catalog, the new PV FST Fairway Woods incorporate a unique ‘Forged Shell Technology’ that applies an innovative combination of forged and investment casting parts which have been individually designed to achieve peak performance.

“The GolfWorks’ Peak Velocity (PV) is one of the best-selling lines of woods in The GolfWorks’ history, so developing a line of high-performance fairway woods to complement the PV line was extremely challenging,” says Britt Lindsey, vice president of technical services for The GolfWorks. “But by bringing together key attributes from both the forging and investment casting processes, our design team created a great-looking, classic fairway wood that simply out-performs most investment cast fairway wood models.”

The new PV FST features a unique three-piece construction of 17-4 stainless and maraging steels. A stainless steel hosel, sole and back are investment cast as one piece, while the head’s crown is forged of stainless steel and the face is forged separately of super-hard maraging steel. Precise investment casting of the perimeter and bottom shell ensures consistency in the FST’s head size and shape, while forging the stainless crown allows for a much thinner (9mm) crown than is found in most investment-cast heads and also permits weight to be redistributed in the sole for a lower center of gravity. The face is forged from maraging steel and has a thickness of 2.2mm.

Lindsey explains that the strength of the maraging steel and forging process allows for the responsive thin-face design, a much thinner face thickness than is possible in most investment fairways designs. The forging process also ensures the face’s structural integrity by producing a much more consistent material dispersion during manufacture.

“With great playability and a classic shape that fits well with the Peak Velocity,” adds Lindsey, “the PV FST fairway woods are an ideal match for our best-selling PV driver line.”
