NEWARK,
Ohio – Over the years, no one has given
golf more innovative designs than Ralph Maltby
of The Golfworks. While some iron designs have
been traditional in shape and style, others
strayed from the norm. But their one common
characteristic has always been performance.
For 2005, The GolfWorks introduces the Glider
X — an all-new iron design that gives
new meaning to performance...and it’s
guaranteed to turn heads.
Unlike so many clubhead designs today which feature
form over function, the Glider X irons put performance
first and set aside a traditional shape in favor
of an intense back-weighted, thin-face iron design
that dramatically improves player performance.
In fact, the Glider X scored an unprecedented
1197 on the Maltby Playability Factor, a score
at the very top of the Ultra Playability category.
“
We’re on a constant search for more playable
clubs, and the Glider X irons have surpassed
our greatest expectations,” says Britt
Lindsey, vice president of technical services
for The GolfWorks. “These very unique irons
feature an ultra thin face thickness that allows
for more mass to be distributed in the sole where
it is needed, yielding consistent sole contact
upon approach. With a longer blade profile, the
Glider X is also more forgiving on off-center
hits, and it has one of the highest moment of
inertias of any iron we’ve tested. Truly,
this is one of most playable irons ever developed.”
The Glider X irons feature an ultra-thin face
thickness of 0.100 inch (much thinner than most
irons) to accommodate more mass in the sole and
a longer blade profile to create even greater
playability. The longer length improves the Moment
of Inertia and makes the Glider X very forgiving.
Testing has also shown marked improvement over
control of direction and distance, especially
around the greens.
However, the most noticeable attribute of the
Glider X is its wide sole design. An atypical
sole width of 1.687-inches (5-iron) allows for
much more mass to be placed lower in the club
and lowers the club’s actual vertical center
of gravity (CG) down to 0.45-inch. With the actual
vertical CG significantly lower than the CG of
the golf ball, the irons are extremely ‘turf
friendly’ and drive the ball airborne from
all kinds of lies.
“
During the creative process,” adds Lindsey, “The
GolfWorks team never lost sight of our ultimate
goal of driving performance. We met those goals
with the Glider X irons, and created one of the
easiest irons to use in getting the ball off
the ground.”
