2005-03-08 - IROD Drives Hybrid Awareness at Ford Championship
FORT WORTH, Texas — With a two-time Masters champion and a British Open champion playing IROD Hybrid shafts this week at the Ford Championship at Doral, the trend toward playing true hybrid shafts is growing among PGA Tour pros, and the IROD Hybrid shaft by United Sports Technologies is clearly the hybrid of choice.

According to the Darrell Survey at the Ford Championship at Doral, shafts counted on the Hybrid Wood Shaft Count made up nearly 13% of the tournament’s total shaft tally. Of those numbers, UST’s IROD Hybrid shaft was the single most popular hybrid graphite shaft among the PGA pros...again.

“IROD continues to do extremely well on the PGA Tour,” says Jim McIntosh, PGA Tour representative for UST. “Whether for fairway or utility use, the IROD’s interlinked carbon fiber technology is clearly visible in each model and enhances the feel and stability of the shaft on every shot. The high modulus graphite fibers are specially woven to provide hoop strength and stiffness, and fibers running vertically provide stiffness while the fibers running at 90 degrees prevent the shaft from deforming or flattening under load.

“This is really is ‘true hybrid’ technology,” adds McIntosh, who expresses concern that all clubmakers and golfers may not be aware that some golf companies simply install a common iron or wood shaft into a hybrid club and then claim the shaft is a hybrid. “The truth is that pairing a shaft with a hybrid club does not make the shaft a true hybrid shaft. The IROD is a true hybrid and we’re trying build awareness of the truth behind the technology.”
