2005-08-02 - UST’s IROD® Named No. 1 Utility
FORT WORTH, Texas — The day of the long iron is returning. Not only was the innovative IROD® Hybrid graphite shaft by United Sports Technologies® (UST) the No. 1 Utility wood shaft at the Buick Open — outnumbering the nearest competitor by a nearly 2-to-1 margin — but the IROD appears to have sparked a renaissance in the use of long irons on the PGA Tour.

At this week’s Buick Open, five of the Top 10 pros played UST-branded shafts, and three of those were playing 2-irons upgraded with high-modulus IROD shafts specially designed to re-introduce golfers to the distance and performance benefits of long irons.

“ Of course, the IROD is well-known as the most popular hybrid shaft on the PGA and Nationwide Tours,” says Shawn Mullin, PGA Tour representative for UST, “but the IROD seems to have single-handedly brought back the excitement of hitting long irons, which is exactly what our engineers had in mind. The IROD long-iron shaft generates a higher trajectory shot from the most difficult lies, a performance characteristic absolutely necessary when playing 2-, 3- and 4-irons which have long been often considered hard-to-hit. However, the IROD has met one of golf’s most difficult challenges and delivered spectacular playability.”

Mullin explains that a new carbon fiber technology combined with UST’s advanced shaft tip design is at the heart of IROD Hybrid Technology. Unlike the ‘invisible technologies’ of many graphite shafts, IROD’s Interlinked Carbon technology is clearly visible in each Hybrid shaft model. On the butt section of every shaft, golfers can easily see the custom-engineered carbon fiber material that enhances the feel and stability of the shaft on every shot. As a part of new Interlinked Carbon technology, high modulus graphite fibers are specially woven to provide hoop strength and stiffness. Fibers running vertically provide stiffness while the fibers running at 90 degrees prevent the shaft from deforming or flattening under load.
